Flavio Briatore Wins His Appeal To Overturn Life Time Ban
January 6, 2010 · Print This Article
Flavio Briatore has won his appeal to overturn his life time ban from motor sport following race fixing tactics in 2008. Briatore ordered his number 2 driver at the time Nelson Piquet jnr to crash to give his team the advantage. The race ended with a Renault win.
The FIA initially took a strong stance and banned Briatore for life from any dealings in motor sport. Many people viewed this as the correct approach with some feeling the punishment was a little harsh. One thing everyone surely agreed on was that cheating must not be tolerated as it would bring the sport into disrepute.
This is a rare loss for the FIA who usually win their cases when challenged by external court cases. It means that Briatore could return to motor sport but I doubt there would be many teams who would want to associate themselves with him.
Although Briatore has won his case he did not get it all his own way. He initially demanded a hefty compensation totalling one million Euros but was only awarded 15,000. It is unclear what the future holds for Flavio but we are sure this will not be the last we hear of him.
